Nestled among the trees of Norwell, Massachusetts, Norwell Public Library was designed to create a comfortable and tranquil environment for its guests. As part of the team that helped bring this project to life, Continental Woodcraft was responsible for creating some of the finer details helping tie it all together such as the wood trim framing around the interior windows, the desks, and the wood tongue and groove paneling, all of which were created out of plain sawn maple. Their craftsmanship also extended to the outside decks using IPE wood. In 2022, Norwell Public Library was selected as one of the Regional Excellence Winners of WoodWorks.org Annual Wood Design Awards which celebrates excellence in wood building design.
Wilson Language Training
Located in Oxford, Massachusetts, Wilson Language Training provides expert education in literacy and language for students with dyslexia of all ages and have championed the science of reading for over 35 years. Continental was tapped to move this project forward by helping to design and craft the bookcase cabinetry in the conference room that displays WLT’s retail books. The challenge of this project was needing to figure out how to maximize the space available to get 32 feet of shelving on a 20-foot wall. The solution included wrapping the walls bump-out features with shelving units as well to be able to cover the entire area of the wall with the exquisite maple finish used throughout. To top off the project the Continental team created a CNC carved owl from WLT’s logo in the top center of the casing.
Orville Platte High School
Continental Woodcraft’s work in the Orville Platte High School auditorium extends from the front of the stage to the stairs, ceiling acoustic panels, and all the way around the radius walls. All the woodwork was made completely out of maple and the walls were laser templated clads finished with a maple stain.
NYU Langone Student Center
Students at NYU are greeted by one of the longest reception desks Continental Woodcraft has ever built. At over 100 feet long and created from solid oak on the front and 1.5-inch thick solid oak on the countertops, this was a complex job. The wood needed to line up perfectly at different faceted angles. To do so, each face was tipped at a different angle to get the placement just right. Another unique area of this project was the main feature wall in the lobby. The boards behind the NYU logo were reclaimed 60-foot-long beams from the 1800s that were repurposed and re-sawn from a demolition of another section of the building.
Assumption University
Assumption University sits within beautiful woodland in the heart of Massachusetts, an area bejeweled by lush greens in the summer and red warm tones in the fall. Though not the designer of the University’s building interiors, the Continental team couldn’t agree more with the use of cherry wood for outfitting Assumption’s newly erected Tsotsis Family Academic Center. The 62,000 square foot state-of-the-art academic facility features a grand entry hall adorned in cherry, from the walls to the stairs and trim. The cherry continues into the 400-seat performance hall, where Continental also supported the need for natural acoustic properties by creating special facet panels for the walls to help with sound. And Continental built and painted the box beam coffers that adorn the Center’s grand ballroom meeting center.
Worcester State University
As Massachusetts’ fifth state-funded school, founded in 1874, Worcester State University has a proud heritage and history; a glowing thread woven into the tapestry of the Worcester community. It made sense, therefore, for the school to find a local millwork firm to help them rebuild their main dining area, Sheehan Hall Dining Hall. Continental, which fabricated all the counters of the dining hall and their stone countertops, faced a unique challenge in building out the counters where food is prepared and cooked. The team had to meet certain requirements to isolate temperature control in various sections of the counter, accommodating high heat from the tandoori ovens and near-freezing temperatures for refrigerators and freezers nearby.
The Continental team also partnered with another supplier to build out stainless steel cabinets for the kitchen that were treated to look like wood and match the rest of the design.
